The Lady Bears rolled to an 8-0 win over Yadkin Valley mate Gray Stone Day in the third round of the NCHSAA 1A State Tournament on May 17 in Bear Creek.

The shutout was Chatham Central’s sixth straight. Cayley Oldham had three hits, two runs and two RBI. Jessica Cockman had a two-run homer and three RBI in all. Hanna Batten had an RBI triple and a run. Leadoff hitter Kayla Williamson scored two runs.

Chatham Central improved to 25-0 for the season and advanced on to the state quarterfinals.

Chatham Central blanked visiting East Surry, 5-0, in the second round of the NCHSAA 1A State Tournament on May 14 in Bear Creek. Kelsey Hayes pitched the shutout for CC and the Lady Bears went to 24-0 on the season.

Grace Christian hosted Lee Christian on the soccer pitch and Freedom Christian on the baseball diamond in NCISAA state tournament games on Friday, May 10. The Lady Crusaders beat the Lady Falcons 4-1 to reach the quarterfinals. Freedom Christian topped the Crusaders 5-0 to end Grace Christian’s season with a 14-8 record.

Union Pines defeated Ledford 3-1 in the first round of the NCHSAA 3A State Tournament on May 8 in Cameron. The Lady Vikings won the Cape Fear Valley Conference championship with an 11-0-1 mark.

Lee County played its season finale and its Tri-Nine Conference finale against Fuquay-Varina on May 7. The Bengals, already with the conference title in hand, beat the Yellow Jackets 9-6. The Jackets finish the season 9-14 overall and 6-10 in the Tri-Nine. From the upcoming school year through 2016-17, Lee County will be a member of the 3A Cape Fear Valley Conference.

Western Harnett, Southern Lee, Union Pines and Gray’s Creek were the final four in the Cape Fear Valley Conference baseball tournament played at Western Harnett on May 3-4. Western Harnett defeated Overhills, Gray’s Creek, then Union Pines, 12-6 in the final game, to win the title.

Overhills won a thrilling Cape Fear Valley match, 4-3 in overtime, at Southern Lee on May 2. Overhills took a 3-2 lead with a little more than two minutes left in regulation before the Lady Cavaliers equalized with 0:58 left. The Lady Jaguars’ Jordan Forbess scored her third goal of the night 5:35 into the overtime.

Southern Lee held its Senior Night and welcomed new Baltimore Raven and former Cav and Elon star Aaron Mellette on Tuesday, May 1. Gray’s Creek spoiled the contest winning 5-3 to create a co-championship with the Bears and Cavaliers for the 2013 Cape Fear Valley Conference title.

Grace Christian eased to an 8-0 victory over Neuse Christian in a Carolina Christian Conference Tournament game at GCS on April 30.

Sanford Area Soccer League and the Sanford Lions Club Fairgrounds hosted the Kangaroo Kup on Saturday, April 27. The Kup is the season-ending celebration and tournaments in all the rec league age groups for SASL.
